Fauna
Fauna in Cuba is very rich like flora, for an exuberant photography. During the tour you may get a greater contact with nature, observing colourful birds, mammals and several species which deserve the delight of any excursionist since the Cuban fauna counts with more than 16 500 species, outlining among them, 42 species of mammals, 350 of birds, 121 reptiles, 46 amphibious, 7 493 of insects, 1300 of arachnids and 2 900 molluscs. The main mountain range areas of the country are the main centres of diversification of the fauna.
You may find in the south mangroves all kinds of aquatic species, while to the north; there are impressive colonies of flamingo breeding, which adorn with their colour the impressive pictures of our trekking.
Among the most outstanding samples, there is the Cuban Grassquit or its scientific name Tiaris canorus, the Cuban gar or the Atractosteus tristoechus, native from Cuba, which inhabits in the river; really a true living fossil and the crocodile.
There are also plenty of tiny species like the smallest toad (Sminthillus limbatus) and the Bee Hummingbird or (Mellisuga helenae) that measures 5 cms, the butterfly bats; the iguana, the Polymita picta, autochthonous colourful snails and the Cubensis little frog, the tiniest of the world.
The most beautiful birds are the Tocororo bird or Trogon temnurus, which is Cuba’s national bird which can be found in the west side of the island, the flamingo at the north of the island and the Amazona leucocephala or cotorra, endemic of the west and the Isle of Pine though we may see it together with the tocororo in the east.
The National System for the Environment and Natural Resources works on the island for the conservation of the species since many of them face the peril of extinction
